There are about six major suppliers of business electricity and many smaller, regional choices. Each offers fixed and variable rates and a choice of tariffs. A business needs to get quotes from each supplier, at least the major suppliers, then choose the best overall deal. This is complicated by the fact that most of the best deals are offered to new customers so it’s not like your business can pick one business electricity supplier for life and be assured of the best deal.

When the energy market was deregulated in the UK, I don’t think anyone imagined the sheer amount of information a business owner would have to sift through to find the best deal on business electricity or business gas. Savvy business owners are finding good deals but many business owners are simply not bothering. At least OfGEM’s latest suggestions to simplify the process of identifying the best business electricity prices are a step in the right direction.

Among successful businessmen, Alex Von Furstenberg is one of those who have a true concern for the society. Proof to this is his recent dedication to the Heal the Bay water quality program which has been going on for three years now. The Beach Report Card is a monitor where people can see the current status of the water. This is also open to the public who wants to participate in helping with the cleanup. The report card also features news forecast on the coast area.

Aside from the Heal the Bay participation, von Furstenberg also finances institution and organizations in need of funding. Areas include education, health, community building, human rights, arts, humanities and environment. These are some of the things that make him even busier than he already was. Specifically, these are some of the institutions which they have bestowed notable contributions: Big Brothers / Big Sisters of America, Central Park Conservancy, Comfort Zone Camp, Motion Picture & Television Fund (Social Workers), NYC Police Foundation,  Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation, Citymeals-on-Wheels, Heart of Los Angeles Youth, Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith, Human Rights Campaign, Human Rights Watch, International Women’s Media Foundation, International Rescue Committee and Oxfam America.

It was quite refreshing to discover that even an Austrian royalty house member such as Alex von Furstenberg is making efforts in helping a country even though he is not a native citizen. Together with the entire Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation, he will humbly be at the beck and call in providing financial assistance to various noble causes who deserves to be helped.

 

Why ERP is Beneficial for CFOs

As the CFOs (Chief Financial Officer) job is to closely monitor the financial responsibilities in a company, they would find implementing an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system highly beneficial. The CFO could easily monitor payroll, and other financial responsibilities such as treasury in a single software suite. These ERP systems tend to be specifically designed for certain industries; however there has been the development of broad-scope ERPS that can be implemented in many other industries with very little need for adjustment or modification.

For the CFO it is important to monitor every department and ensure that they are keeping to budget and not overspending. By enabling the CFO to monitor this via the use of a well-designed system, it is much quicker and easier to notice if and when there are any problems in this area.

Another huge benefit of ERP systems to CFOs is that they can quickly adapt to changes in the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). ERP systems can easily monitor different facets of the IFRS operations and efficiently update their financial instrument monitoring to incorporate this new data and legislation.

An example of when this would be extremely useful is when recent updates in the IFRS has meant that now ERPs must monitor research and development costs as  well as the capitalization of fixed assets in particular in larger companies or sectors. Having a full understanding of how to categorize these quite often complex processes and capitalizing on them can be very complex and requires a huge amount of data. Rather than a time consuming effort of data gathering after the fact, ERP allows for real-time data gathering that can be easily and quickly collected on demand into a useful, specific report.

In larger companies where there may be many external contractors or vendors, the payroll and accounts payable records may show large surges of seemingly unrelated costs in the ERP system. Having the option to identify and track these surges enables the CFO to recommend different financial policies to each head of department to avoid future surges leading to disastrous financial quarters or excessive pay-outs that would exceed that time-periods financial allowance. This is of particular use during tax-sensitive periods of time.

The best way of making the most appropriate tax payments is by fully understanding the exact financial situation of the company. It is in the CFOs best interest to have the best control possible over this allowing more accurate financial forecasts and future plans.

The CFO can really take advantage of the advanced technology of the ERP system in that they can customise their reporting to reveal specific data that is relevant to them at the time. They no longer need to waste valuable time trawling through infinite data to create the specific report they may need. By utilising the ERPs existing functionality and adapting it to new data requests, the CFO is not only creating a more efficient method of work, but also a more cost-effective solution.

The Project Management Triangle

The project management triangle is an illustration that demonstrates the “triple constraint” of project management. Each side of the triangle is labelled with an aspect of a managed project. One side of the triangle represents the “cost” of the project. The second side represents “time” and the remaining side represents “scope.” Project managers often use the illustration of the project management triangle to demonstrate to clients that if one of the triangle’s attributes (cost, time or scope) changes, the other sides of the triangle are affected as well. For example, if the scope of the project is increased, then the time and cost aspects are extended.

When a project is estimated, the three aspects of the project management triangle are determined and presented to the client in the form of a proposal. The project is approved based on the formula of time, scope and cost required to accomplish the project goals. If one of the aspects of the project management triangle is altered, the estimate is no longer accurate. For example, if the client finds that they cannot cover the cost of the estimated project, the scope must change. As a result, the time factor will change as well.

In practise, scope is the aspect of the project management triangle that is most likely to change, particularly for software development projects. As clients see potential in a developing software project, they may begin to see value in new features and functionality not previously conceptualised for the application. Each feature that is added to an application in development increases the scope for the project. When scope increases, so do the time and cost aspects of the project. Unfortunately, even though the project triangle is relatively easy to explain to clients, the aspects of the triangle are challenging to enforce in practise.

Project management software is essential for effective management of a project, including time, scope and cost. Project management software provides an automated way to constrain changes to time and cost once scope is defined. Scope is determined when the project is first created in the project management application.

If additional features are added to the project’s scope, project management software basically forces changes to the time and cost of the project as well. The way the application accomplishes this goal is by creating timeline estimates based on time estimates of each project task.The number of tasks that may be accomplished in a given work day is determined by the number of project resources. The number of resources, which are a project cost, may be increased, which will in turn increase the number of tasks that may be accomplished in a given day. Once each resource is added to the project, and each task is defined for each resource, the project timeline is generated.

One reason that a project management application is so important for tracking projects is that software generally does not allow the user to simply make changes to the timeline.Timeline changes must be made by changing the number of resources and/or the number of project tasks. These changes are then reflected in an adjusted timeline. Project management software assists the project manager in keeping the triple constraint of a project under strict control and avoiding the project manager’s enemy, “scope creep.”
